The 4 Best Youtube Channels for Teaching Art to Kids

Inside: Teacher-tested Youtube channels for teaching art to kids

TEACHING ART TO KIDS

When I entered my first grade classroom for the first time many years ago, I was so excited about teaching my little friends all the things. The one thing I was most excited for? ART! As much as I loved the idea of teaching art, in practice it ended up being my not-so-favorite thing. Why? There was just too much to do that felt more important - planning for math, phonics, grammar, social studies, science…you get it. I finally figured out a rhythm that was a combo of mini-lessons and meaningful projects, but it took me years to get to a place where I felt like I was doing my students justice when it came to art (aka doing more than directed drawings). The Youtube channels below made it easy to teach a quick mini-lesson on an element of art or famous artist. Check them out!

1. TATE KIDS

Tate Kids is run by the Tate Museum in the UK. This channel has so many great videos about art movements, famous artists, and even art how-to videos. The Tate Kids website is another fantastic resource run by the same organization

2. ART WITH MATI & DADA

This next one is an absolute GEM. Art with Mati & Dada is a collection of short animated episodes where Mati and her little robot friend, Dada, meet famous artists from around the world. Teach your students about VanGogh, Degas, Matisse, Michelangelo, and more!

3. ART INSIDER

Art Insider is a channel that I love as much as my students do! Sometimes, art instruction can seem stiff, formal, and focus only on famous artists of the past. Art Insider gives us an up close look at art that’s happening now! From nail art to cakes that look like remote controls, art is all around us and the principles and elements of art can be found in almost all of these videos! This channel isn’t specifically made for children, so while most videos are just fine for kids, I’d recommend that you preview them before sharing with students.

4. #METKIDS

The Met has put together a series of videos just for kids! #MetKids is a treasure trove of videos about famous artists, how-to videos, and behind-the-scenes videos around the museum.

LOOKING FOR MORE ART RESOURCES?

Struggling to find time in your day to plan, prep, AND teach art? In my first few years of teaching, I depended heavily on craftivities and directed drawings to fill my "art" time - there was just too much to do and art got pushed to the back burner! While there is nothing wrong with those activities, they can't replace an art lesson focused on essential art concepts, studying famous artists, learning artistic techniques, and exploring different media. Bite-Size Art Lessons will take your whole-class art instruction to a whole new level.

Each lesson includes no prep lesson slides, step-by-step project slides, a teacher guide, and more! Your students will love learning about the elements of art, famous artists, and more!
